Reading Week with Sunshine and Beaches

My friends and I, being the crazy people we are, decided to spend reading week in Cancun, Mexico.  Mexico is a great way to spend a week for relatively cheap and short vacation away from home and all the stress from school.

Most months of the year you can go to Mexico for $1100 or less but because it was reading week it cost us around $1450 give or take.  The price wasn't too bad considering it was reading week and it was all inclusive.  You didn't have to worry about anything.  If you're content with hanging out at your resort you can drink from the time you wake up till you're ready for bed and all you have to do is tip the people that brings you your drink.

But if you're looking to explore, to try out new things or to check-out the party scene it can cost you an arm and a leg.  The price of doing excursions outside the resort can really discourage someone after having to come up with the money to get to Mexico in the first place.

During the week we were in Cancun besides lying on the beach every day we also decided to do some exploring regardless of the price.  Since we were there already might as well give everything a try.  After we decided that we thought what better time to start exploring then now so after our flight landed in Cancun and we checked into our resort we decided to check-out the night life Cancun had to offer.

First club we decided to check out was Coco BongoThe fee for getting into this club was $50 USD which included all you can drink and the club was open till 4:00 am.  Besides the drinking they also offer many shows in between all the partying and dancing.  The shows they offer ranges from Spiderman, The Mask, Beetlejuice, Batman, Phantom of the Opera and much more.  Despite the price for getting into this place it's a must because you won't find another club with shows like these and the amount of people there to just have a good time anywhere else.

This is a video of one of the show they'll perform.  It'll give you an idea of what you're getting yourself into.

Excursions are definitely not cheap in this city.  We wanted to try parasailing so we checked around for some prices.  The cheapest we could find was $50 USD and it was only for a few minutes in the air.  This was totally not worth it.  So instead, we joined a Jungle Tour Adventure where we got to drive a speed boat to a beautiful section of coral reef in the Western Hemisphere to snorkel.

Another excursion we decided to check out was the Mayan Ruins in Tulum.  It was a two hour drive from our resort so we decided to just rent a car and drive there ourselves.  That sound like a good idea at first but when we got the car we realized the model we picked didn’t have air condition.  So, the whole time we were driving we had to drive with the window down and being in Mexico the air blowing into the car was just hot humid air.  Another valuable lesson we learned on this drive was there aren’t many washrooms on the highway from Cancun to Tulum so you have to watch your liquid consumption.

Though the drive was a little rough, the site was spectacular enough to make the trip worth it.  There was plenty to see and plenty of explanation explaining to you what you are looking at so it’s not just a pile of stone.  There is also a beach here.  This was where Mayan ships dedicated to trade around the peninsula would have docked.

  1. Although Mexico is not on my list of places to see I do love to travel. I have friends all across Canada and the US so I have done a far bit of more local travelling sort-of-speak. Although, your pictures are gorgeous and you look like you really enjoyed yourself.

My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a trip to California as I have never been to San Diego or San Fransisco and I'm dieing to see both. I would also love to see the Coral Reefs off of Australia.

I Love BC, I go a few times a year and it's like I have never seen it before even though I have travelled the same roads multiple times.

    1. I did have a lot of fun in Mexico it was nice to get away from all the stress and not have to think about anything because I didn't have contact with anyone beside the people I was with.

I actually have a lot of friends and family across North America as well and I would love to visit them all one day but it's just hard since it's so expensive to fly out east sometime compared to the price to a different continent.

It's kind of funny that you are planning a trip to SF, I actually wrote a post on SF as well. Happy travelling.

    1. Thank you. Mexico is nice. If you go at the right time of year it could cost you less than $1000. Mexican food isn't bad, it's pretty tasty. It's actually one of my Asian friend's favorite kind of food. You can try Julio's Barrio in Kensington. They have a drink call the bulldog which is pretty good and they have different flavors too.

    1. Thank you. You should check out Mexico if you get the chance. I didn't get any vaccines before going to Mexico. It's pretty safe there. You might need the hepatitis a & b shot if you don't have it already. I think the major thing to watch out there is the water because a lot of people may not be use to it and can give them stomach aches. Hope that helps.
