Current Event: How many people are travelling in the U.S.

The declining gas prices in the U.S. are causing more and more people to travel by car. Some statistics on International Travel News Daily state that 70 percent of people will be travelling by car for their summer trips this year. To save on airfare, 21 percent would be more willing to drive even if their destination was more than 10 hours away. Out of the 1,200 people surveyed, 34 percent stated that they would be travelling for this Memorial Day weekend.

The top five places for people to travel to in the U.S. are to a city, ocean, national park, lake, and resort respectively. Most people visit these destinations due to tradition, favorite places, for a new experience, or to visit somewhere new. The top three places to travel in U.S. are New York, Las Vegas, and Chicago for this summer.

In expenses, 27 percent stated they plan to spend more than last year, 47 percent stated they plan to spend the same amount, and 26 percent plan to spend less. The travel industry in the U.S. is fairly similar to those that would be expected for Canada. The U.S. is a popular destination for Canadians to travel too due to the variety of different places travellers can visit. U.S. is a mixture of cities, beaches, lakes and resorts, and national parks. Whereas, in Canada or more specifically Alberta, there is more of a mixture between city and rural areas. Therefore, being the main reason the U.S. is a more popular travel destination internationally and within its own nation.
