The Manchester Derby

"Derby" or "Local derby" is a term used to describe a sports fixture between two local rivals, particularly in association football in Europe. It is equivalent to the phase "Crosstown rivalry" in North America. In Canada, we have the infamous rivalry between Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators etc. In Manchester England, there are two football teams in their top division: Manchester City and Manchester United. This derby has over one hundred years of history and it heated up again this year.

Historically, Manchester United owns a far better record against the Manchester City. Also, they were the reigning 2011 English Premier League Champion. This year, however, Manchester City finally turned the table on Manchester United. Back by Sheikh Mansour, one of the wealthiest man of the planet, Manchester City is slowly becoming a football powerhouse in England. With a deep pocket, City were able to lure talented players from traditional powerhouse teams such as Real Madrid and Chelsea. Some North Americans may argue that they are the "New New York Yankees." - a team that buys Championships.

In the 2012 season, Manchester City trumped Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United in their first meeting of the 2012 season. Three weeks ago, Manchester City beat Manchester United again (1-0) to overtake as the leader of the English Premier League. The match was dominated by Manchester City. Their captain, Vincent Kompany from Belgium, delivered with a deadly header to secure three points for the home team.

With both teams tied with 86 points heading into the final game of the season, football fans around the world were on the edge of their seats to witness an epic finish. Indeed, they were not disappointed.(except for the Manchester United fans perhaps?) Manchester City were down 1-2 against the lowly Queens Park Rangers (QPR) headed into injury time. Then, City completed the most improbable comeback in football history. Sergio Aguero of Argentina, scored the league winning goal in stoppage time to beat QPR and leapfrogged Manchester United to win the English Premier League title for the first time in 44 years.

Growing up as a Liverpool fan, I naturally hate the Manchester United. I would cheer for any team who can beat the United. I was in pure joy when I found out Manchester City beat Manchester United by two late goals! Be sure to check out the video above!

  1. Great to see a soccer post! Both these games were on at the same time so I was flipping back and forth between the two games, like the mad soccer fan that I am. At final whistle in the Manchester United game, City had just scored to make it 2-2. Manchester United fans were practically celebrating the title. However, with a minute left, Sergio Aguero scored a goal that gave me goosebumps and won the title ever so dramatically! Great post!

  2. Haha. I love the rival between sporting teams! That's particularly one of the reasons I chose Manchester United to be my team when I was only ten years old. My dad being English, is a huge soccer fan and would cheer for his home team West Ham United. However, when they got kicked out of premier league my dad would cheer for Chelsea. Anyway my dad always hated Manchester United because they usually won, so I picked them as my team just so when we watched our teams play against each other the games would feel a little more exciting. It feels good to have a little competition.

    1. I hate Manchester United for the same reason as your dad: They always won! I am a fan of underdogs and therefore "Hammers" - (West Ham United's nickname if you do not know) is not a bad underdog to cheer for!
