Canadians beware when travelling to Mexico

According to a CTV News online article, a Canadian woman on vacation in Mexico was found severely beaten near an elevator in the hotel she was staying at. According to the article the assault occurred at The Riu in Punta Cerritos, a popular tourist destination. The article also reports that the Canadian woman was refused from two clinics before being sent to a hospital.

According to the article there have been other reports of violence towards Canadians on vacation in Mexico. A month before this incident UBC student Ximena Osequeda was found dead on a beach in Mexico and Robin wood, a resident of Salt Spring Island, B.C., was killed during a robbery.

The Canadian government has issued travel warning for Mexico that can be found on the Canadian foreign affairs and international trade website.

  1. Well some parts of Mexico are still relatively safe (mostly the extreme south parts), I would have to agree that anyone going should do extensive research prior to traveling. Just last week, another 40 beheaded bodies were found on a roadway in Northern Mexico, bringing the death total to nearly 55,000 in the drug war, 15000 alone in 2010! Personally, unless flying down and staying on a resort, I would never travel there.
