Traveling in Switzerland

As most of you may know us Calgary folk spend a ton of time traveling within the city; especially in cars.  According to a Calgary20 online article, a 2008 statistics Canada reports that 75% of Calgarians are car dependent.  I myself, being a student at Mount Royal University, am sick and tired of spending what seems to be an eternity in my car as I live in north east Calgary and find the commute to be quite far.

I believe that Calgarians could use a break from the cities long car commutes and annoying train rides by taking a trip to Switzerland. If you find that you spend too much time in your car and you need a relaxing peaceful break with nature then I do suggest you read on.
A BBC news article reports that Switzerland’s train system is ranked second to Japans famous Bullet train for extensiveness and rate of use by locals. By leaving their cars behind commuters rarely have to wait to make connections via train, making for a quick and smooth ride. The public transportation in Switzerland can takes visitors out to the beautiful rural side of Switzerland where individuals can enjoys breath taking hiking and cycling trails and canoeing routes. Only nine villages in Switzerland are inaccessible by train.

In 2008, a non-profit organization, SwitzerlandMobility, launched a network of hiking, cycling, and canoeing routes. These routes span over 19,000km and are combined with rail, bus and ferry services. On the SwitzerlandMobility website you can make your own routes with tons of choices including 600 sign-posted routes. All of these routes are linked to at least one public transportation stop which also includes timetables. The website also comes with an iPhone app that lets individuals plan their trip on-the-go.
I myself was once a train commuter in Calgary and I believe that others, including Alisha Eisenberg from the Calgary20 online article, would agree that it isn’t the most time efficient or comprehensive train system. I believe that a quick and smooth public transit system that could take me out to hiking trails would be amazing and a huge break from the traffic I face on a daily basis. Do you agree that city commuting is a hassle? Leave a comment with your thoughts below.

  1. I hate Calgary Transit! The system is the worst one I have ever been on. I would agree that Calgary should revamp it. Nobody wants to take the train because it takes so long and most of the time you still have to take one or two other buses just to get where you want to go, unless maybe you work in the downtown core. Plus Calgary transit is so expensive these days. You pay like $2.75 just to go one way. It is cheaper and much faster for me to drive and park at Mount Royal University for $4. I actually like taking the train because it gives me a break from driving but Calgary transit just doesn't make sense. Until they fix these problems more and more people are going to be reliant on their vehicles. I wish we could have a transit system like Switzerland, or France, or England for that matter.

  2. Sadly, people who runs Calgary Transit probably never even been to Vancouver! The Skytrain in Vancouver is already much more efficient than C-Train. The buses would usually arrive on time regardless of the weather.
Blame it on oil and gas industry for the lousy transit system we have here. Alberta government, as always, are making tones on royalties and rather see each and every Calgarian drives. Pretty sure they'll never build the Calgary-Edmonton high-speed train, even though Bombardier has been successful building those for all the other G8 countries!
